Mitragyna speciosa is the Latin name for kratom, a tree that grows in the tropical climates of Southeast Asia. Indigenous cultures have consumed its leaves for centuries, by chewing them off the tree or steeping them in water to make a tea. Kratom was first introduced to Europeans in 1839 when Dutch botanist Pieter Willem Korthals identified it.
